For everyone who thinks that Mike Johnson reference to 18th Century values is not relevant…

Women in America did not get the right to build credit/get credit cards in their own name without their husband co-signing until the early 1970s (post Nixon)

Think about that for a while!

Sign a lease, buy a house, get a union job, work many jobs at all - just going back to 1972 will be awful. Unless you lived it, you can't imagine.

Exactly
My parents were willing to send me to college.
I wanted to study anthropology. My father said I could be a teacher, nurse or secretary.
They put in a restricted female dormitory: no men above the first floor.
It was just that way…

That was my dorm, too! I went to school part-time my junior year so I could move off campus. My family did let me major in theater but insisted I get a teaching certificate. And a lot of the people I was in school with assumed I was there to get my Mrs. degree.

Quite the adventurer! But with a practical teaching certificate.
When I was in middle school, not many of my teachers had certificates…they were all avoiding the
Vietnam draft…teach in a city school and you don’t have to be drafted
