I have read 1984 a number of times, but it is not my favourite among its contemporaries. I would also recommend Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (skip the movies), and Walden Two by BF Skinner.

Although rarely mentioned today, they both provide a look at where our path is leading us.

In response to LD Jones.
Just finished re-readfing Huxley, I may go back through 1984 for dystopian comparisons, as far as Skinner I'm more familiar with his behavioral science work from when I was working on my education degree because of his connections to Maslow and Gardener in childhood development than any fiction.
