Is there any less helpful poll question than, "Is the country on the right track/wrong track?" in establishing what voters want? Genuine question.

I ask this because I'm hard pressed to identify a time when if a pollster had asked me this question I wouldn't have answered, "Wrong track," and that includes in the immediate wake of candidates winning who I desperately wanted to win.

Historically, the question has had some predictive power in presidential reelections -- see attached.

I think even this power will be stymied when we have a former president (never mind which one) running against a current incumbent.

It’s been used as a proxy for “Are you dissatisfied and will you vote out the incumbent?”
In response to Verifiably Nobody.
