It's a thought. Some arguments escalate and others join in and it's a melee without resolution or attempt at being civil.
We must learn to debate and not attack. Mute and block those we disagree with irrevocably. Because it's possible to disagree and scroll on.

We should implement a timeout algorithm. When users start arguing with each other, they are put in timeout for x minutes. The number of minutes increase if they continue to argue after coming out of timeout.

Maybe some prompts to get people to listen better, to ask for things like: ‘what do you mean by X?” Could you explain how you know that? ‘Can you give some links that give supporting data?’
