A childhood friend's mom died
and I remember
every step in their house
from the basement
to the third floor
I remember what was left on those steps
books and toys
papers and bills

I remember the green tile
in the upstairs bathroom at sleepovers
and the green marble sink
with the first tube of toothpaste I ever tried
that had three colors

Before we stopped relying on the comfort
and the tending
and the care

I remember Jean Marie.

She never made you eat
what you left on your plate
She never told you to say, "May I?"
instead of "Can I?"

She made sure
you felt
welcome
you felt
at home
you felt safe.

I wonder if we mourn the parents of our friends
more than we mourn our friends
because they were also our parents.

And every time we lose one of them
we remember that we only lost what
they gave us
when we realize
they're gone.

Those early small moments
in our early small lives
loom large
forever.
