I don't like the framing of "culture war."

That makes it sound like we're debating the propriety of curtains and what time to eat dinner, not the rights of human beings.

I think the media like the term because it's less fraught than "civil rights".

"Fraught" is an interesting choice, but yes, I'm glad you understand my point.

It takes something full of humanity and importance and makes it bloodless.

Yeah, "civil rights" would seem to be a pretty neutral term. Yet so many people want to deprive some of us of the same rights they have, though they object to being called out for it. (Another trope the media generally allow to pass unquestioned: "special rights".)
