Here’s a very #Large shumai (shaomai) 焼売, and it is marketed as a wedding cake alternative by a company called Kiyoken 崎陽軒 in Yokohama, Japan

There are up to 120 mini or regular sized shumai inside the jumbo ones to be served to wedding guests

In case anyone is curious, here’s their webpage on this jumbo shumai. You can order a *smaller* version and have it shipped to your home within Japan

What a cool idea although it looks more like a giant Hawaiian pork hash (nothing but pork in the siu mai). I used to make them for work potlucks and would have loved to surprise everyone with something like that. Do they come with a giant steamer basket?

So I read the website, and this sounds disappointing but their instruction is to microwave not steam… as you guessed, you’d need a jumbo steamer for a jumbo shumai

Oh no, no, no, no, no. Anyone who microwaves pretty much any kind of dim sum is out of their gourd. I have now lost all faith in humankind.
