Mrs. Carter changed that. She not only advocated, she normalized that topic.

May she be well remembered.

That brought back a memory from 3rd grade, ~1957. The school principal asked about interesting people we knew. I said the girl next door was "retarded" ( we said in those days) "and her name is --" He stopped me. "We don't say names." I wondered why. Her name was Carol and I thought it lovely.
