Thinking about this guy today, who came to sit for me in 2019, at the end of his life. Dying & he knew it. Wanted a memory to leave for his friends. He barely sipped the water I put out for him, but posed like a trouper for hours. Always a privilege to paint someone, but especially him. #SpoutArt

Great portrait.
And reminds me about the portrait gallery’s 2024 portrait contest. I’ll spout the link to it shortly.

If I was making a shopping list of the many benefits of making art, this point would be near the top of it.

Financial reward, not so much.

I like his old school braces and the detail on the armchair upholstery.

You know what? That was the very first detail I loved about him: standing up those trousers were hitched almost to his chest. They don’t make ’em like that any more.

It's so good to hear that, thank you! I often prefer to let the portrait speak for itself so the viewer can find their own story in it, but in this case there were particular qualities I wanted to transmit, since I knew in advance it would serve as a memorial.

That's the sort of picture where you wonder what he was thinking. I really like it.

He was really matter of fact about his situation. We spent most of the time talking about his career as a sound engineer. A lot of satisfied reminiscing, from a man whose life is well wrapped up and tidied away. I hope that comes through in the portrait.
