My 71yo mom is traveling to Italy next spring, her first time to go to Europe. Book recommendations to get her in an Italian state of mind? She likes light fiction, beach reads, and mysteries. #BookMatch Thank you Spouters!

Tim Parks has written a lot about living in Italy. Also Anthony Doerr, before he wrote All the Light We Cannot See, wrote a really lovely memoir about his and his wife's year in Italy with newborn twins. It's called Four Seasons in Rome.

Really sorry - would use this for despicable self-promotion but my story is set in Norway … (BTW beautiful to visit in summer … just do not go in winter) … BUT one of the characters is from Italy (oh gosh I should stop this despicable self-promo!) - https://www.goodreads.com/...

For mystery/procedural novels set in Italy, Donna Leon‘s Guido Brunetti novels are really quite entertaining.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. It's the book they based that cute movie with Diane Lane and Sandra Oh on.

"Enchanted April" by Elisabeth von Arnim

Four English Ladies who barely know each other decide to escape a gloomy London winter and set up quarter in an old Italian castle. Not everything is going smoothly, but all´s well that ends well.

Can recommend wholeheartedly!

Francis Mayes has written more than one book about her journey to living in Italy. They’re all great!

And if you like audible, she is the one who reads Under the Tuscan Sun so you can hear the whole book in her soft southern drawl.

The movie was nice but has little to do with the actual book.
