Today, I received two bills for my ER visit when I fractured my elbow in Paris. As an "uninsured" foreigner (I have insurance, but not in France), I owe a total of 200Euro. That's it. My ER copay here at home is higher than that.

Several xrays plus quick, efficient, multilingual care - shockingly affordable. Amazing.

Would a French person feel the same way if they were hurt on vacation in the US and needed treatment? Absolutely not.

It serves as yet another reminder of how badly messed up the US "healthcare" system is.

When I took my parents to Germany to visit their son (much younger brother, in the military), Dad had a flare of diverticulitis. Went to a German doc blocks from hotel. I think we paid $20 for the visit & treatment. Healthcare in the US is an abomination.

Every time someone I know visits the US, I worry that they'll be bankrupted if they get sick or injured.

I'd worry for them too. We all know it happens.

I got ill while in Italy and the entire bill FOR EVERYTHING was $25. The U.S. doesn't have health care, they have a medical business meant to make insurers wealthy & patients are nothing but a means to that end. No one should be calling it health care.

Yeah, that's why I put healthcare in quotation marks. It's anything but.

On a previous trip, I got sick in Paris. An in-home (well, in AirBnB) after-hours visit from a doctor cost me $80. Again, I was blown away by the care and the low cost.

Check you insurance. They may reimburse you for it.
I'm trying to get $60K from my insurance right now.

Yikes - I hope they reimburse you the full amount! That's a lot of money.

My insurance won't cover it, but we bought travel health insurance that will reimburse the bulk of what I owe. Thanks for the reminder :)
