So who would be the least worst option?

This is a silly idea. Most states do not have an open primary, meaning you have to switch your voter registration to R to vote in their primary. Meaning you don’t get to vote on the Democratic line for other primary races (Congress, Senate, State Leg, Governor, Mayor, School Board).

In many cases, the presidential primary is on a separate date from the regular primary. the big question would be how easy is it to switch back.

Depends on where you live. I am registered to vote as an independent so I can vote in the GOP primary.

For the past 3 elections, there has been no Dem. candidate for any county level office. The primary is the election when it comes to local governance.

I understand, but as a blanket approach it’s silly. There are also places where the Democratic Primary is the deciding factor in local governance.

Do what you want, but I don’t think this will have a significant impact.
