@EternalVigilance

Awhile back I promised you I would take a photo of a black squirrel. This is one of the new babies this year. There are three in this family.

I can’t remember seeing them when I lived there, but that’s probably because they’re not anything remarkable here. I see dozens of the everyday. 😂

The black ones always seem more energetic than the other ones, and far more playful. They stick in sibling groups. 💛

I attended Kent State University in the 90s. Black squirrels were everywhere then, and now have pushed several miles in all directions. The story was that a few had escaped the KSU labs and from there just took over. The school paper has a comic named Ubiquitous Squirrels.

Ubiquitous Squirrel?? 😂😂
I love it!
The black ones are the fun ones. They seem to have more energy than the grey and brown ones. They’re constantly entertaining us. 💛

Peculiar. Our squirrels change their fur from red to gray for winter and that's how I imagine all squirrels used to be. Must be the urbanisation that brings these new variations.

Black might not be a bad camouflage, even during daytime, as the predators might not understand what they're seeing.

That’s fascinating! Ours stay the same colour.

The black ones are very easy to see in the snow. The great and brown ones fade more into the background.

Now I’m all curious about colour changing squirrels!

Here’s a brown/red one. 💛

There is always a family or two in our yard.

In winter and springtime, on bright days, they drape themselves over the fence to soak up the warmth of the sun.

They are abundant here. 💛

Where I am in Ohio, we mostly have gray squirrels - but occasionally you'll get a white or albino one in my neighborhood. The red squirrel who's been showing up here (unmated, unfortunately, AFAIK) is new to me. They're indigenous to Ohio, but I'd never seen one until this summer.

My area of Ohio, including my yard, does have black squirrels, though far more gray ones. I know at least two black squirrels live in or around my yard, as I've seen two together.

i had friends visit Canada from Australia. They could not get over the squirrels. Of all things, they loved the squirrels the most. They are a dime a dozen here. (Is that expression even used anymore?)

This squirrel is stealthily tippy toeing across your deck believing he is not seen, LOL!

It's adorable. I don't ever see these in my region.
