That said, I'm stepping up and bothering – our car died last week, but we're waiting for the new year to buy another one because we really want an EV, and you'll also be able to get $4000 off a used one starting in January (thanks President Biden!!)

Chevy Bolt has a base price of $27K, and starting on 1/1/24 you can get $7500 off that at the time of purchase. Nissan Leaf is similarly priced. That's not too expensive for a new car...many people just don't want to bother. (I do hope that EV prices come down overall, though).

Wait, your car died after just putting out $ for repairs? That so sucks! 😞

Tell me about it! And the mechanic didn’t notice the much more serious problem than the one he fixed?? Not going back to him.

How do the batteries do in the winter?

I’ve heard in extremely cold weather the battery can be 30% less efficient, but the Bolt can normally go 250 miles so that’s still plenty for most trips.

It’s part of Biden’s infrastructure law! For used cars, starting on 1/1, you can get a $4k rebate on a used EV and a $7.5k rebate on a new one. For used it has to be from a dealer, but I think the online sellers will count.
