Ask the waitress to get my family a table next to them and we start discussing at a normal conversational volume topics like health and beauty products made from human placentas, our worst experiences passing a kidney stone, etc. and then tip well.

Intervene. Depending on the specifics of who's involved and the tenor of their behavior, either directly (speaking up for the server, calling the server away to "help" me) or indirectly (getting a manager). I was a server, briefly. It's a thankless job, and nobody deserves that kind of treatment.

I’ve been in this situation once, I went off on him. The server thought I was going to beat him with the high chair sitting next to me.
