In my school we were taught it was "states' rights" and, thankfully, my parents were quick to fill in the gap "states' rights to continue to enslave people based on race". Others in my class probably never heard that part. Not even in AP History

We were taught states rights too but the angle i learned was from Lincolns perspective it was about keeping the support of European countries from going to the south. But to me the strategy wasn’t what mattered. The 1st sentence of every succession statement mentioned slavery. It was about slavery!

I’m 49. My history class most definitely did not teach me history the way it should’ve been taught. There’s so many things that I’m learning that I never knew before. And it’s embarrassing and shameful.

But I will say even in Indianapolis I was taught that the Civil War was about slavery.

It was my parents and family who pushed the "states' rights" argument on me, but fortunately the history is pretty transparent.

I am learning that I missed a lot of important history, like black Wall Street, etc... But, fortunately, I did not hear of the State's rights, lost cause BS until college. The Civil War was about State's rights, in a way: The State's right to enslave people.

I was in school after Reagan in UT which was a bit like being in FL now. We also had to be taught creationism if they were teaching evolution as coequal theories 🙄
