In my school we were taught it was "states' rights" and, thankfully, my parents were quick to fill in the gap "states' rights to continue to enslave people based on race". Others in my class probably never heard that part. Not even in AP History

I’m 49. My history class most definitely did not teach me history the way it should’ve been taught. There’s so many things that I’m learning that I never knew before. And it’s embarrassing and shameful.

But I will say even in Indianapolis I was taught that the Civil War was about slavery.
