Not to put too fine a point on it, but Japanese New Year is like Christmas or Thanksgiving in the US. People return home to spend time with family. To wit, Tokyo is relatively quiet now because people left to visit their parents and grandparents in more rural regions. #japan #earthquake #tsunami

In other words, not only is it the middle of winter up in Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures, but several generations were celebrating together when the quakes rolled through. Folks in coastal areas had very little time to head for higher ground. I’m anxious about what 1st light will reveal.
