I'm NOT belittling anyone's losses, but I think the actual reason is that most of the people who were murdered were just 'regular people'. Unless the impact was directly related to you, you don't know unless it's publicized, like Anne Frank's diary.

my great grandmother, 2 of my great aunts in poland, unknown number of descendants in belarus. 3 from poland who survived (great uncle & 2nd cousins) 1 of whom killed himself before i was born.
