Oy. This is incorrect. Would you say, "Bernice shoulder the obligation..."? Or, "She shoulder the obligation..."? The correct answer is C.

It's grammatically clunky and while I accept your degreed explanation, I challenge it on the structural integrity of subject/verb agreement. It's as fluid as dry cement.
