That explains so much! One thing that has always irked me about Black southern baptist churches is that some of their teachings are so fatalistic. Like they just resign themselves to let life happen to them rather than taking charge & controlling their own fate. "Let go & let God" comes to mind.

That's a good point! Reminds me of that pastor in FL who said slavery was beneficial because it introduced Christianity to enslaved Black people - I can't fathom how anyone can come to that conclusion.
