Worked with an #acting #coaching client on a role whose psyche is fragmenting. As fiction, it's a safe place to connect with frightening and damaging impulses; the shroud of it not being real helps consequences of what the character experiences harm less.

But the mental and emotional toll can feel real if lands near our actual selves. Gentleness with ourselves, even as our characters are ungentle, is very worthwhile.

So many directors forget this, especially when they encourage method acting techniques. It's important to leave space i rehearsals for safety, and I always try to end with something that allows the actors to leave their character in the theatre.
