One of my peeves is white people talking about how hard it is to overcome their racism.

How hard do you think it is to live with the fallout of that racism? The institutions built in service to that racism?

People say it to the people experiencing racism and then expect THEM to cheer them on.

Doing that work is FOR YOU.

BC living off privilege, skating through life over the literal and metaphorical blood of others, is cutting off the supply of light to your soul.

Don't ask for cookies or pats on the head.

Is treating people like people seriously that hard?

Or is that the excuse?

You're right.

And if I've done this, I'm sorry - I will do better from now on.

I'm not the one to apologize to! But we are all growing.

I did use the word "overcome" in a spout recently, referring to the process of learning about racism, and I was mad at myself afterward. Nobody called me on it, but it was a poor word choice. It's not hard. It does require some attention. But the subject matter is "things that were easier for me."

Doing this work is a lot like therapy--digging into your past & your assumptions to bring to light just how thoroughly entangled *all* our (i.e., White people's) thoughts are with White supremacy. Therapy can be unsettling--but it's the only way forward. Once you start, you can't imagine going back.

Anyone who thinks they should share this with people experiencing racism hasn’t fully recognized their racism.

For most, it is that hard, and that is the excuse

I honestly cannot understand it. My brain doesn't work in those directions.

And that is not to say I was born knowing or understanding or even seeing, but I'll say the only "challenging" part comes from other white people who make it socially costly.

In service to white Christian patriarchy.
