OK, you asked for it, @DailyPictureTheme , by choosing #Waste as today's hashtag. Back on my soapbox.

Return with me to those thrilling days of yesteryear, when the EPA was still cleaning up the pre-EPA mess.
We are standing a few hundred feet up a mountainside looking down at a river valley ravaged by industrial air, ground and water pollution. Beneath a whitewashed hazy sky the AT crosses the gray, murky Lehigh River on a 2-lane highway bridge in the middle of a somber area graced by a large smoking factory, a used car lot, and a bunch of decaying houses. Gray smoke fills the dirty air belching from several different stacks. Many patches of ground along the riverbanks and mountainside beyond are denuded or covered with scraggly grass. The surviving forests look unhealthy and olive toned.

Pictures are from July 25, 1983, Lehigh Gap, Pennsylvania, along the most famous long-distance backpacking trail in the world, the Appalachian Trail. The Roberts Court this session will likely make images like this happen again.
We are standing a few hundred feet up a mountainside looking down at a smoky valley ravaged by industrial air pollution. There are some green fields in the valley below as you get some distance from the unseen source of the pollution below. The mountainside across the valley is also partially denuded of green is several swaths. The slope we are on is nothing but cracked and barren grayish beige rocks.

The Roberts Supreme Court has perpetrated a series of atrocities on the American public, most notably overturning Roe v. Wade, but more is coming. Google Chevron v. NRDC if you have not yet heard of the coming storm when (probably) this deeply corrupt court overturns it.

The surviving forests look unhealthy and olive toned. A highway also follows this side of the river with a railroad and a smaller road cutting across the far side of the river.

The ruling would allow corporate interests to challenge federal regulations protecting our air and water, plus a whole lot more, including civil rights, labor protections, health care. Just Google it.

One factory created this wasteland. Quoting from the EPA website:

The Palmerton Zinc Pile Site, encompasses the Borough of Palmerton and surrounding areas, Blue Mountain, a large smelting residue pile called the Cinder Bank and much of the valley. For nearly 70 years, the New Jersey Zinc Company
We are standing hundreds of feet up a mountainside looking down at a river valley ravaged by industrial air, ground and water pollution. Beneath a whitewashed hazy sky the AT climbs through a surreal wasted landscape of naked rock — gigantic boulders covered with chunks of blasted rubble. Occasional black, broken skeletons of dead trees grope upward through the barren mass. There are continuous panoramic views into the smoky industrial valley below. Beyond the heavily localized devastation, the valley and the mountainside across the river from us is heavily wooded. Distant views are heavily obscured by the steamy, dirty air.

Under a smoky and hazy gray sky walking along a flattish ridge crest with many barren area strewn with rocks and spiked with dead tree trunks. The grass and surviving trees and shrubs look olive toned and unhealthy. There are glimpses of hazy, smoky valleys beyond.
