The tip given was probably based on cost of the meals before taxes, and service fees if the bill was for 70 bucks at the end of the meal. They probably tipped based menu prices of the meals and drinks not the additional tacked on fees. The plates could have been 15 to 20 each w/ 5 bucks in drinks.

There were no fees. This was a chain breakfast restaurant. The meals were not expensive. They ordered several each and took the leftovers home. This was not a fancy restaurant.

But there were taxes right? What is the local tax rate combined after State, County, City, Borough combined have tacked on theirs like? Maybe they only actually ordered around 50 bucks worth of stuff and left a 10% tip on the menu prices which is still reasonable.

I mean what was the actual bill? Was it 70 or just rounded up in post for exaggeration? Who was discussing neighboring diners tips? and why? is it your business? Hell, what if the couple just wanted one trip to eat out in a great while to enjoy some comfort and that was all they could afford to tip?
