unwashed *fresh* eggs can be left in unrefrigerated for ~21 days. They have a protective cuticle, which is what allows eggs to incubate, also 3wks from lay to hatch. I’ve not refrigerated eggs since raising chickens, over 20 years & wash right before use; knock wood, no issue yet.

Which is true, but I would bet that the percentage of people with access to fresh unwashed eggs (and who know about the cuticle) is some small fraction of one percent, so it's still awful advice for the overwhelming majority of people in North America.
