US musician, singer-songwriter & record producer, he was best known as the frontman for Sly & the Family Stone (โ€˜66-โ€˜83), the first US rock group to have a racially integrated,mixed-gender lineup. Crawdaddy magazine called him the founder of progressive soul.

Their biggest hit came 6 months later w/ Everyday People, a #1 pop & R&B hit thatโ€™s been covered many times, most famously by Joan Jett in โ€˜83. Want Me To Stay would be Slyโ€™s last Top 10 in โ€˜73.
By the mid-70โ€™s his drug usage effectively ended the group & he released several unsuccessful solo LPs. When he performed at his 2006 Grammys tribute, it was his first time onstage in 19 years. But his rock & funk/psychedelic fusion influenced many.
