US musician, singer-songwriter & record producer, he was best known as the frontman for Sly & the Family Stone (‘66-‘83), the first US rock group to have a racially integrated,mixed-gender lineup. Crawdaddy magazine called him the founder of progressive soul.

Sly and his group’s breakthrough hit was Dance To the Music in summer of ‘68, going Top 10 pop & R&B. Their biggest hit came 6 months later w/ Everyday People, a #1 pop & R&B hit that’s been covered many times, most famously by Joan Jett in ‘83. Hot Fun In The Summertime hit #2 in the summer of ‘69

Want Me To Stay would be Sly’s last Top 10 in ‘73.
By the mid-70’s his drug usage effectively ended the group & he released several unsuccessful solo LPs. When he performed at his 2006 Grammys tribute, it was his first time onstage in 19 years. But his rock & funk/psychedelic fusion influenced many.
