There aren’t enough if any Orientation and Mobility Therapists in the country!
That means there is no one to instruct visually impaired children and adults.
So I am going to post links for people to explore this profession.

Imagine being in a preschool or play group or classroom with teachers who are not trained to adjust lessons to best work with vision impaired children…very quickly people would make assumptions about your abilities.

If anyone has interest or children who might be interested this is a great field

1/2 I’m a retired Special Education Director that was oversaw 5 school districts. I can tell you that finding an O&M therapist is worse than looking for a needle in a haystack. I sadly had to send several of my visual impaired students to our state school for the blind that was 2 hours

2/2 away. This meant they had to live there in dorms & only came home on the weekends. Can you imagine having to leave home as a kindergartener & live in a dorm just because your school district couldn’t find a certified therapist? It was heartbreaking! PLEASE consider this as a profession.

Yep
I live in ny and it a shortage here too but it is also about districts/counties not wanting to spend the money.
There are dozens of schools for the deaf. Student enrollment is decreased since implants. There is no reason they cannot open their buildings for classes for blind children

Sooo understaffed! My guys are 38 & 35 and it was an uphill battle for us too. Even though it was never enough coverage, for the most part all our O&Ms were great people.
