Well, as to the agreement of pronouns and antecedents, we now use the singular "they" instead of the outdated and awkward "his or her."

I usually avoid the his/her vs. they problem by changing the subject from singular to plural. Instead of "Each student must..." I write "All students must..."

And in British English, singular/plural is much more nuanced and flexible - e.g.
"Rovers United are running onto the pitch"
"Rovers United is going into administration"
