Earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above can overturn heavy furniture and inflict considerable damage in ordinary buildings.

Very. I was in bed and to put it mildly, things shook violently. The campus was fine, happily but really bad things happened elsewhere. (I lived the first half of my life in So. Cal. Earthquakes were common but that was by far the biggest I experienced.)
