4.8 may be nothing to us Californians, but it is devastating to those on the East Coast. The geology is different, the density and construction of buildings is different, and the infrastructure is different.

They are not designed, nor prepared, for this. They deserve our empathy and compassion.

Imagine you have never experienced anything like this. The ground is suddenly moving, the walls are moving, roads are moving and buckling, furniture is moving and falling. Things are shattering and it goes on and on. Then it stops. Then the tremors come, more shaking, more moving. Sheer terror.

Sounds like my first experience in 1984 after moving here four years earlier from Connecticut. It’s terrifying.

So true. And I must admit that I’m very grateful to be in CA and not working on the 63rd floor of the Empire State Building like I used to.

The 2011 earthquake damaged the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral. It was greater on the Richter scale, but shows the problem with an earthquake in old cities with masonry that relies on gravity for strength.

My Father lived in San Diego for many years. He lives with me now in Nj . He told me it was an earthquake right away because he had been through a few.
