The smallest, most innocuous words of discouragement can discourage people to the point they stop doing something they love or following their dreams.

Precisely. Even as adults… if a friend, child, parent, student… says they want to be a writer, painter, acrobat … encourage them!

NEVER say things like,
—A little late, isn’t it?
—You’re too___.
—That’s a pipe dream.
—Another thing?

Or any kind of discouragement. It’s utterly soul crushing.

During my career I wrote research & texts. Then, I enthusiastically struggled to write my first fiction book. Someone I deeply respected shamed me for struggling (& for my writing style), & said they’d write a book to prove how easy it was—and did. It was good.

I felt ashamed & stopped.

That stinks! That person is a total jerk. You should take it up again! Everyone has different styles and a different process, some slower & some faster, which doesn't reflect on the quality or worthiness of the work.
