The smallest, most innocuous words of discouragement can discourage people to the point they stop doing something they love or following their dreams.

Crying about this now. From joy yesterday to crushed by criticism today...

That sucks!! I'd say "don't let it bother you," but that's almost impossible. Instead, I'll say to the criticizers: don't be jerks and think about the effect of your words!

Yah, even being on this platform can be disconcerting.

The constant corrections to your thoughts because it's unacceptable to some in their analogous way can be diminishing.

If someone has done this to you, just point me in their direction because I would like a word.

Aw, thank you! It's more just a general observation... People have definitely done it to me before, and do it to Melissa all the time. So infuriating.

This is so so true. The number of things that live rent free in my head to this day that the people who said them wouldn't even remember is ridiculous.

My response, when someone(mostly youngs) says they want to do something is always, “Awesome! Go for it! Be the best one you can be!”

Precisely. Even as adults… if a friend, child, parent, student… says they want to be a writer, painter, acrobat … encourage them!

NEVER say things like,
—A little late, isn’t it?
—You’re too___.
—That’s a pipe dream.
—Another thing?

Or any kind of discouragement. It’s utterly soul crushing.

I was only encouraged to have, or pursue dreams to the extent that it didn't interfere with the important business of holding a job and caring for my family. I don't remember an age when that wasn't emphasized to me.

It's so common. And even when people successfully pursue their dreams they still get criticized.

Did you see the latest episode of Finding Your Roots? The careless words of the grandfather echoed through this woman’s life 😳 he probably never gave it a second thought
