What a freaky wild oratorio Belshazzar's Feast is. Full orchestra, big-ass chorus, a stentorian baritone, & 2 brass bands. A royal drinking party goes sideways when the Babylonian king desecrates sacred vessels of captive Israelites; he dies & they celebrate the fall of Babylon. HUUGE sound.

Next came Elgar's Cello Concerto with Sol Gabetta. This 1919 work is both passionate & contemplative. She wore a sleeveless green gown & her upper arms looked like an athlete's. What attacks! Her unearthly encore included her humming an eerie soprano melody to the cello. Magnificent soloist.

Second that! She played in Chicago a week ago with Klaus Makala after his former girlfriend Yuja Wang cancelled—and he was announced as next CSO music director.

Anyway, she was astounding! Five curtain calls and that same magical encore.

That amazing encore turns out to be from a piece by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. I shared it this morning.
