For me, it's hard to find a balance between being informed and getting worn down by worry or even despair. When I consume more news, I get more upset. (Blood pressure readings have confirmed this.) So I need my escapes into a game, or a TV show, or to pretending some sportsball event matters.

I think this has always been true. Think of the movies of the 1940s, how escapist so many of them are.

Most of them. I wonder what it was like to watch "Casablanca" when it was released in 1942, without knowing how the real story was going to end.
