August 15, 1983: The southern portion of the Taconic Mountain Range is basically two parallel chains separated by a high central valley. The Appalachian Trail follows the eastern fork.

We are standing atop cliffs of reddish gray rock looking down into a sun-drenched valley hundreds of feet below. The valley floor is relatively flat, although wooded hills bisect it to our right and others rise in the distance along the entire horizon. Most of the valley floor is wooded, too, but there are several green fields, some houses and a small pond visible. The sky is bright and clear, but rather whitewashed along the horizon, which is the only portion of the sky visible in the photo.

In Connecticut, this consists of a high, wooded plateau called Mount Riga, with the rocky crag of Lions Head rising from its southernmost tip. This location provides the peak with spectacular views to the south and east, across the Housatonic Valley,
We are standing on the edge of a plateau looking over treetops down into a sun-drenched valley hundreds of feet below. The valley floor is relatively flat, although wooded hills rise in the distance along the horizon. Most of the valley floor is wooded, too, but there are green fields, rural lanes, some houses and a large pond visible. The sky is bright and soft blue with gauzy, hazy clouds.

of a rugged, hilly country of forests, lakes, and small farms. These were easily the best views since Shenandoah, and I knew from previous hikes that the views only improve as you head north.

After the shelter, the Appalachian Trail ascended Bear Mountain, the first 2000-foot summit over which the trail actually passed since Shenandoah National Park.

The climb was very rugged, but the trail ascended through low, scrubby pines past naked rock ledges with constant views to the south, east, and west. Nice views always make a difficult climb seem easier.

The summit was crowned by the ruins of a stone monument built in 1885. The monument now consists of a large, disorderly pile of rocks.
Standing atop a summit of a mountain range, looking at several rounded summits along the crest ahead. The sky is a soft blue with a few small thin, hazy clouds. We are standing atop the grassy, very crumbled remains of an old stone monument looking out over the treetops of a forest that covers the entire range, with the exception of some cliffs and stretches of rocky crest ahead.

The cement platform which used to sit on top of the monument now rests near the bottom of the rock pile. The panorama from atop the rock pile is still spectacular, with legitimate 360-degree views. To the north loom the massive hulks of Race Mountain and Mount Everett in Massachusetts.
Beneath a soft blue sky with a few clouds, we are atop a mountain looking over treetops northward along the ridge ahead as it passes over a series of mostly wooded rounded peaks. We can see for miles in the clear, dry air. Lines of hills and other mountains run across the horizon.

To the east lies the broad flat Housatonic Valley, with the Berkshires of Massachusetts stretching out to the northeastern horizon. To the south, one’s gaze extends across the plateau to Lions Head and the mountains and valleys beyond.

To the west, across a high, wooded valley are the peaks of the western fork of the Taconics.
