October 1, 1983: After crossing Pollywog Stream on a logging road bridge, the AT proceeded to Rainbow Stream, which it followed for a good distance upstream, passing a long series

Beneath a soft light blue sky with a single small cloud in the upper right corner of the photo, we are standing on a shady portion of the shore of a large lake. Our portion of shoreline is covered with tall grasses and a few leafy shrubs. The far shores are low forested ridges, mostly covered with evergreens sprinkled with a few hardwoods showing red, orange or gold autumn foliage. Beyond those ridges, a bit hazy with distance, rises a massive lofty mountain, with extensive alpine regions in its top half.

of cascades and small waterfalls in the boulder-strewn shallow waters. About two miles into this stretch I arrived at Rainbow Stream Lean-to, where I took my first real break of the day. I had eight miles under my belt and had climbed the second-to-the-last mountain on the Appalachian Trail.
It is morning beneath a clear, soft blue sky. We are crossing a wide, shallow stream with many partially submerged rocks. Upstream and the lefthand bank are mostly in the shadows, the sun is still rather low in the sky. The sun is hitting the nearby section of the stream and the forest on the righthand bank, a swath of white birch with blazing yellow foliage and maples in bright reds and oranges. Beyond that, a forest of stately old evergreens.

I kicked back for a half-hour. When I set out again, I crossed Rainbow Stream and followed the opposite bank past the three Rainbow Deadwaters. These were small pond-like stretches, along which the stream widened, and the current became very still.
It is morning beneath a clear, soft blue sky. We are walking along the edge of a marsh of water grasses on both sides of a small, slow-moving stream. There are a few large rocks scattered through the marsh and along the stream. On the far side of the marsh is a mixed forest of dusky evergreens and hardwoods blazing in red, orange, gold and bright green autumn foliage.

The scenic qualities of the lake country have been a pleasant surprise.

The shallow, rocky stream widened and deepened, becoming a placid channel wandering through an extensive freshwater marsh filled with water grasses teaming with birds and small creatures.
It is morning beneath a clear, soft blue sky. We are walking along the edge of a deadwaters, where a small stream has widened into a small pond, deep blue and rippled by a fresh breeze. A wide patch of green and gold water grasses grows in the shallow water on our side. On the far side of the pond is a mixed forest of dusky evergreens and hardwoods blazing in red, orange, gold and bright green autumn foliage.

Eventually, the Appalachian Trail came out on a grassy stretch of the southwest shore of Rainbow Lake. The haze of the morning had cleared, and across the lake there was an absolutely fantastic view of Katahdin's massive profile.

The trail followed on or near the shore of the enormous lake for the next five miles. At the far end of the lake, the Appalachian Trail climbed a ridge known as the Rainbow Ledges. A large burned-over area near the top had good views. Katahdin seemed almost close enough to touch.
A hazy, whitewashed overcast sky. Standing on a rocky stretch of ridge crest, looking out over a dusky green evergreen forest. There are a few red and dark orange shrubs near us and splashes of reds and yellow hardwoods in the forest below. Beyond the forest, a bit hazy with distance, rises a massive lofty mountain, with extensive alpine regions in its top half and low clouds starting to scud across parts of its crest.

So did the thick, black clouds drifting sullenly across the sky. My one remaining hope is that it rains tomorrow and gets it over with before Monday.
