I have this idea for a project and rather than buying pre-dyed fabric I thought I would dye it myself. So I needed a BIG indigo vat for this stage. This is a 55 gallon trash can I got at Home Depot (I also bought wheels for it).

Here I have 113 grams of Jacquard pre-reduced indigo and 113 grams of sodium hydrosulfite in it. Just need to adjust the pH to alkaline n ow.

Usually I use calcium hydroxide but this is like 45 gallons of water (since I didn't fill it to the brim) so I brought out the big guns. I still needed 100 grams of lye. I don't even remember why I bought this but I guess it is getting used now. pH about 11 now.

It's hard to see how this is different from the one in spout 2 in this thread but the lye has been added. Vat is a nice yellowish green below the surface (as it should be).

I didn't have something to stir with so my husband bought this board and cut a handle into it. It is hard to stir against the resistance of that much water but this ended up being perfect. (Yes it is permanently stained blue.)

It is heavy but there's not much of a step up between my driveway and the garage so I put some flower pots in the bottom (to keep the fabric out of the sediment), put the lid on, and dragged it inside. Will dye tomorrow unless it rains. Fabric is scoured and waiting.
