September 29, 1983: A relatively-level ridge walk led to Mountain View Pond. Across the small, crystal-clear lake, Boardman Mountain’s slopes were aflame with fall colors.

A clear deep blue sky. We are standing beside a bush on the shore of a pond. The shoreline is rocky, there are more partially submerged rocks just offshore. A mixed evergreen and hardwood forest surround the pond, continuing up the slopes of a small mountain directly adjacent to the far shore. The evergreens are dark teal, the hardwoods are a riot of reds, oranges, golds, yellows and bright greens.

The air was very tranquil for autumn, virtually a dead calm. A perfect reflection of Boardman was etched into the lake surface, and each stone of its rocky lakebed was clearly visible well out from the shore.
A clear deep blue sky. We are standing beside a bush on the shore of a pond. The shoreline is rocky, there are more partially submerged rocks just offshore. A mixed evergreen and hardwood forest surround the pond, continuing up the slopes of a small mountain directly adjacent to the far shore. The evergreens are dark teal, the hardwoods are a riot of reds, oranges, golds, yellows and bright greens.

Water and sky were an incredible blue, while conifers and late-turning hardwoods added some nice green tones to the mix. The five-month trek was climaxing nicely.
A soft blue early morning sky. Descending a mountain, looking out over the treetops of a forest of dusky fir and northern hardwoods with dazzling autumn foliage in red and gold. The sun is backlighting the leaves and making the colors pop. In the distance a wooded mountain with a rounded crown rises above a flat-topped ridge.

From the pond, the Appalachian Trail climbed very gently along an old, grassy tote road before leaving that road and shooting straight up a steep slope of Little Boardman Mountain. It crested the ridge at the top of some ledges with great views,
We are looking down a mountainside from a rocky ledge over the tops of trees that have lost most of their leaves. Beyond a mostly unseen narrow valley rises a second mountain of slightly greater height than ours. There are some dark green strips of spruce-fir forest visible on the other mountain, but almost everything else is a blaze of red, orange and gold hardwoods. In the distance, the colorful flanks of a loftier mountain range can be seen beneath the cloudless pale blue sky. Over the last several hundred feet to the crest of that range the hardwood forests give way to the teals of a predominantly spruce-fir forest.

and then passed another ledge which had even better ones. The air was dry and clean with no haze or pollution. Little smoke-puff clouds stood out in 3-D against the deep blue sky, and individual trees were discernible on ridges miles away.

A sprawling hardwood forest in the valley between Little Boardman and Boardman Mountain was acres of red, gold and orange treetops.
