2 weeks ago I went to a #free workshop by #ArtemisiaNursery in LA where we learned+did 3 methods to propagate #CaliforniaNativePlants

This flat of small milkweed seedlings (monarch butterfly food) — divide & transplant to 6pack tray
My 6-seedling tray just now— they’re growing! #DailyPictureTheme

#Free #CaliforniaNativePlants workshop Method 2 is sowing seeds.
The red Monkeyflower (mimulus cardinalus) seeds are so tiny that we mixed w sand and spread on top of surface. (5200 seeds fit in 1/4 tsp!)
They sprouted in a week and I have a tiny carpet of sprouts! (+Pencil tip) #DailyPictureTheme

Third #CaliforniaNativePlant propagation method we did at #free workshop — plant cuttings.
Cut sticky Monkeyflower. branches to 4-in twigs, clear 2 bare nodes at bottom, trim leaves back, dip in rooting hormone & put (2 nodes deep) in 9:1 perlite:potting mix. Keep shaded, moist. #DailyPictureTheme

One last thing about narrow leaf milkweed. Plant ALL 6 plants no farther than 10-feet apart in your yard. That’s what is needed to support monarch caterpillars at their hungriest. Don’t split the 6-pack with friends.

Milkweed goes dormant in winter, wakes up when monarchs do.

Isn't it awesome? Thank you Indigenous folks for moving seeds around the coast! For arid climates these guys are the BEST. I know some of the Indigenous farm programs tgey partner with and 10/10. I'm intrigued by ancestral potatoes
