I was today years old when I discovered that, if a business sends you mail enclosing a "postage paid" reply envelope, the businesses only pays postage for that envelope if it is actually used. Kinda makes sense but I'd assumed postage was charged upfront regardless of whether the envelope was used.

So that must mean that if you return your postage paid ballot to a secure drop box, your state isn’t out any money? Cool. I kind of felt bad about using the drop box but feel like my vote is too important to leave it up to the mail.

If it helps, I've had vote by mail for more than 20 years in 2 states (OR & AZ), and I've never NOT had my ballot be counted. Here in AZ, they even send you a text to tell you they're sending your ballot, when they've gotten it & when they've counted it. And I vote in every election.
