I’ve often thought to myself, what possessed me to study Stalinist Russia? It is for times such as these. Russian leaders have always been brutal, even to their own people.

My research was on early Soviet political education. Arch Getty was my prof. I spent the Summer of 1994 in Moscow. I started part time teaching, which was fatal to my dissertation. Arch warned me, I’d like the money too much. Went into public ed, and teach at risk high school kids - best gig ever.
