Anybody who’s had extensive experience with nursing homes, of various types and qualities, knows how severe the caregiver shortage already is, and that the shortage of registered nurses is even worse. We’re also familiar with the high cost of nursing homes. How can this ever work???

WAPO - Biden administration imposes first-ever staff minimum for nursing homes

The senior care industry lobbied furiously against the new standard, which will require a registered nurse on site at all times.

Absolutely!! The Covid pandemic has decimated nursing staff in hospitals— totally burned people out. The whole industry has been under terrible pressure for four years. I have friends who are nurses so I have been hearing about so many problems— simply too much demanded of them for way too long!

For what it’s worth, it’s no better here in Canada. Shameful how our seniors are treated.

It’s a mess. Nursing home care is hard to find, very expensive and short of caregivers. The last nursing home I was visiting several days per week had a few American employees but most were immigrants from all over the world. Americans should definitely think about that. We need them.

Kinda sounds like they will be closing down many unfortunately. Is the high cost of nursing homes due to insurance?

Trending in healthcare industry is the investment of hedge funds, private equity firms, and straight up vulture capitalists. AKA Rick Scott on steroids.

I suspect it’s many reasons— lots of expenses. Insurance but also having enough qualified employees, now they want a registered nurse on site at all times— very hard to find! The hospitals are having a hard time staffing nurses! Nursing home care is hard work, physically demanding.
