Forward progress (also finished most of the inside – flooring & trim – between the 1st & 2nd pic before jumping back to the siding...)

Very cool!
Is that tight knot cedar? Also, why run those furring strips
a) at all?
b) at an angle?

It's Eastern White Cedar. Not totally sure about the strips (my friend/boss's idea)...think it's cuz it's a timberframed house w/ stress skin panels (OSB plywood on 2 sides of 4" foam) that have breathability issues. The angle's so there's drainage & nailing surface for the vertical t&g boards.

Shouldn’t be water behind them but it’s a nice redundancy!

Yeah, probably not. Especially as for stress skin panels they recommend impermeable tar paper as the underlayment rather than breathable house wrap...

I’ve always used the tar paper. I’ve only ever done horizontal beveled cedar siding.

I also love the look of cedar shingles, but they're a pain in the ass to install and not really practical. Added a lot of character to our house using them on my porch addition (good contrast with the boring white vinyl siding everywhere else)
