Mountain

The mountain stands heavily
Where the shifting ground has pushed him up
Feeling the spinning earth below him
The flickering days against night
Blending in gray twilight
The rushing seasons
Warming then chilling
Then warming his feet

He can almost see the plain before him
He can almost see streaks of stars

Trees spring up to his knees
Reaching up, out, toppling
Again and again
Tickling his skin

But always the scouring wind
Carrying grains of him away
Thinning, carving
And shaping

And always the water
Gouging and biting him
Grinding at his bones
Making him groan
Forcing him to spread his feet
Slump down

The plain is closer
And rising higher
Grains of him mixing
With the wind and the rain
And the heat and the cold
Spreading far before him
Layers

He tires, his peaks blunt
His proud edges round
He spreads his feet wider
Slumping and tipping down
Nodding off

Sleep deepens
Deeper and deeper
And he feels himself carried
Onto the plain
Becoming the plain
Forgetting the plain
Forgetting the star streaks

The river deepens
Glittering over his memory
And of his brothers
In the endlessly flickering light

But heaven forbid a geologist reads it. I didn't do any research. It's all just impressions in my head.
