The term “woke" was created by Black people referring to being alert to systemic racial injustices. The first documented use of the phrase “stay woke” happened in the 1930s when Lead Belly ended his song by advising Blacks traveling through Alabama to “stay woke.”

First time my mother said “stay woke” to me is when i enter an all yt high school! My mother Traveled from the south to the north by car with her family.

Similar story. I’m 65. My mother told me to stay woke whenever I went into predominantly white spaces - which was all the time - school, stores, etc.
