As kids we used to get licorice root to chew on and make lips turn yellow! No candy available, wartime, then when eventually licorice candy, called Spanish, appeared, we didn't know there was a connection. It wasn't known as licorice.

Did you know that the flavor of black licorice is not of licorice but of anise instead? Licorice root has merely a mild sweet taste and was traditionally used as a sweetener (and medicine). Licorice candy w/ real licorice extract has a colorful history of being banned because people abused it.

I was given black licorice in Amsterdam when I was maybe ten weeks pregnant. That was a cruel trick played on me.
