I got my 1st credit card when I was 18 because my parents co signed.
It was an ARCO gas card. I started building my credit rating even though I couldn't have a card without a co signer. I remember after it was legal for women to get cards on their own, getting inundated with offers from companies.

In response to Paulette Hawkins.
My first card was an ARCO. (Was it still "Atlantic Richfield" back then, I don't recall.) They were offered to college seniors (well, males, anyway) where I attended school.
