A similar story was relayed to me by a woman who married the son of her parents' best friends. Perfect gentleman until the night of their marriage. He beat her up and told her he would be the boss. She left him immediately and both sets of parents pushed her to go back to him.

As if the abusers wear a mark on their heads so they can be easily identified!!

Former friend's fiance was the picture of gentlemanly while dating. He threw a chair at her on their honeymoon telling her that she "belonged to him now"

he hid his inner monster until she couldn't easily get away

My aunt was brave enough to divorce one abusive man in the '60s. (He had her committed to a mental hospital because husbands could do that back then.) Dated a man at work in the '70s, didn't rush into things. He beat her their wedding night. She ran to her parent's house, her dad told her to go home

Terrible! If my daughter came home after a beating, her husband would be a very sorry man.

I never heard what, if anything, my grandmother said/did. I just remember being horrified that someone hit my aunt and her dad wanted her to go back to him. I was in junior high, so people didn't tell me much.

I think that's part of the problem. We need to talk about it more.
